Athleisure and sportswear have dominated the fashion industry. From supermodels, influencers to celebrities, everyone has embraced the trend. Apart from it being comfortable, it makes us feel like we have the image of someone living a healthy lifestyle and of someone having their life together.
With the rise in its fame, so do the speculations. More people are curious to know its effects on the body? Is the whole sportswear effect all in the mind or does it really improve your workout regime?
“Do the clothes we wear influence our behavior and our way of thinking?”
According to a study in 2012, the answer is a definitive yes. This brought about a term from two researches called “enclothed cognition” which defines the mental changes our mind undergoes when we wear a particular type of clothing. The volunteers for this study where brought into a lab with either being given a lab coat or not being given one. Those wearing lab coats showed better performance quite significantly.
When you dress like an athlete, you’re more interested in being fit. With clothing that bridges the separation of streetwear and activewear, you can wear it more often. This makes your feel more in the mood to go to the gym as well. It’s not the perfect analogy but it does make sense.
When you start feeling better about yourself, you can dress the way you feel. The clothes you wear represent your inner motivation so it’s a feedback loop. I feel good so i’ll wear things that make me look good.
When you work out, you usually go for activewear because you feel that it aids you during the work out. This is actually true, from the shape to the material, these can help you last longer and support your body into getting it to the shape you want it to be.
Nylon was originally used to make women’s stockings, this is why the synthetic fabric is extra soft like silk. It is also mildew resistant and dries quickly. At the same time, it remains breathable and pulls the sweat from your skin the the fabric surface so it can evaporate. This means you can work out longer because you’re more comfortable as you feel less sweat on your skin.
It can also stand even the sweatiest of your workouts and has immense stretch and recovery. This allows your pants to move with you and lets your body go through intense workouts while remaining flexible and comfortable.
Spandex is known to be the stretchiest of them all. With the fabric’s power to stretch 600 percent of its size, it allows you to put in a limitless range of motion and still goes back into place. It’s also breathable, wicks moisture and quickly dries which is why it’s a true staple in tight fitting exercise clothes.
With Spandex, you can achieve maximum comfort, no chafing and remain free from bacteria which is important to stay sanitary during your workouts.
Polyester can be found in majority of work out fabrics and even in casual wear. This is why it’s great in the athleisure trend as it is one that you can easily pass off both in the gym and on the streets. It’s durable, wrinkle-free, lightweight and breathable. This allows you to work out to your heart’s content without feeling restricted.
It also repels UV rays so it’s a great option for running and outdoor activities and it can insulate you even when you’re wet so it’s a great option for any active plans you have.
Apart from the material, the fit remains to be an important factor to ensure a better workout and better results.
It can be tempting to wear something thick because you feel it will make you sweat more but it is much better to wear tops that are of light and stretchy fabrics because this will keep you cool and lengthen you endurance. At the same time, it won’t limit your mobility. It should be quite fit so that it won’t get in the way and you won’t feel it especially when running and other exercises with lots of motion.
While a lot buy bottoms that match their top, it isn’t really important. It’s more vital to select something that will feel light, comfortable and breathable. This will let you move more freely. Something that will cover most of your legs will also allow you to sweat more but it should be tight so you’re at ease in movement.
Sportswear is a must to have in anyone’s wardrobe because it’s good both for your mind and body. Don’t wait for summer to come and just get fit to live your best life. There’s practically no reason not to get it. It’s a great way to get your body to be more active while looking great at the same time, it’s the best of both worlds.
